A fabulous, talented and intelligent, driven woman who has achieved big things from a young age Khanyi started off as a news reader on SABC1. She dreamt big and thought she wanted to be in print media, then she set her sights on the magazine industry not long after appliying for the job at True Love Magazine, which is one of the biggest women’s magazines in South Africa. There she worked as a fashion and beauty assistant and had the opportunity to see how a magazine was made. That made her even more enthusiastic about the do’s and don’ts of a magazine. She did everything under the sun. She was an errand girl, made coffee at the office and at fashion shoots, collected clothes from shops for photo shoots and taped the models’ shoes. It really gave her insight into what she wanted to do.
Not long after that, an opportunity came for her to shine and she did exactly that at the age of 22 when she was appointed as the Editor of True Love. Media24 was looking for an intelligent, sophisticated young black lady who would take the magazine to new heights. The timing was perfect, because the country was changing politically with the new government so it was a perfect move for Media 24. Within a year of her appointment the circulation went from 70,000 to 140,000. This was a great achievement and it showed that she was a force to be reckoned with. Khanyi grew phenominally in the next eight years. She married, had two children, but later experienced some difficulties in her marriage and filed for divorce.
Her divorce was finalised in 2003 and she needed a change so off she went to Paris and worked for the South African Tourism Board, but the media bug had her and she then decided to enrol at Harvard Business School to go and study for an MBA. This was where she met Jonathan Newhouse, the Publisher of Vogue magazine, and he became her mentor. After her studies she came back to South africa to start working on her own media company, and that’s how Ndalo Media was born. She partnered with Media24 so that Destiny magazine and Destiny Man could be published through Ndalo media.
She serves as Director of the Foschini retail group and on the advisory board of the Stellenbosch University Business School. She was also selected as the World Economic Forum’s young global leader. Last year she married Chinezi Chijioke, a Nigerian management consultant.
