Samuel Ogbu CEO of R18Billion LIBERTY PROPERTIES

Samuel Ogbu is Liberty Properties CEO. The company has a portfolio in excess of R15bn under management. Ogbu joined the property company from Old Mutual SA, where he was heading the large corporate business division. The Nigerian-born Ogbu jokingly says he came to SA for the beer. He was headhunted by SAB, where he was head of the brewery’s Soweto operations. Previously he was head of marketing at Sage. He has more than 10 years’ general management experience in sub-Saharan African countries. Ogbu is a UK-qualified chartered accountant and an MBA graduate.

Samuel is Chief Executive Officer of Liberty Group Properties, one of South Africa’s leading property groups which owns and manages such prestige assets as Sandton City, Nelson Mandela Square and Eastgate shopping mall among others. He is a UK qualified Chartered Accountant and MBA graduate who has spent the last 12 years in various general management roles in South Africa and other sub-Saharan African countries, and has over 20 years professional experience. Samuel is also President of the South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA), the foremost real estate industry organisation in Africa.


The combination of Samuel’s professional knowledge and energetic personality have led him to most recently specialise in the re-launch of corporate brands across the financial , entertainment and retail industries. Prior to joining Liberty, Samuel was Head of Large Corporate Business at Old Mutual South Africa. He was previously an Executive Director with Sage Life with responsibility for marketing and also for the Sage Unit Trust business. Samuel is a past Executive Director of Africa Media Group overseeing TV Africa’s business in East, West and Southern Africa. Following a successful career in accounting and management consulting in London, Samuel moved to South Africa in 1998 with SAB Miller during which time he headed the company’s business in Soweto, one of Africa’s most dynamic and exciting consumer markets.

Samuel Ogbu's curriculum vita includes executive positions at Old Mutual South Africa, Sage Life Limited, TV Africa and SAB Limited. He completed his Chartered Accountancy training with Price Waterhouse in London and holds an MBA from Wits Business School.

He also holds a diploma in theology. He is married to Ireti. He enjoys running and gym and indulges in the occasional cigar and single-malt scotch. He is a supporter of Liverpool FC.
